  9. Topic: The cane toad in Australia.

Thesis: The cane toad is on it's way to conquering the whole continent and there is nothing we can do to stop it.

    Main Points:
    History:
Cane toads were introduced to Australia from Hawaii in June 1935 by the Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations in an attempt to control the native cane beetle.

    Story:
It's a formidable creature, resilient to Australia's extreme heat and scarcity of water.

It is poisonous so most animals that eat it will die.

These two factors have greatly affected the Australian ecosystem and I will elaborate on how and why.

    Future:
The toad is here to stay and nothing man has done to try to contain it has succeeded. It cannot be stopped. Australia might as well give up and succumb to its presence.

  11. For this next speech I will be discussing certain values that our society endorses by watching/participating in sports like football and basketball, and how those values have driven a wedge between America’s youth and the more refined sport of golf. This will be a persuasive speech.
Thesis Statement: Today we are witnessing a large disconnect between America’s youth and the sophisticated sport of golf, which is most likely the result of a major shift in values, for the worse.
    Main points:
    I. We live in an age of shortcuts: people will go to extraordinary lengths to get the most immediate form of gratification
-Performance-enhancing drug use in football and basketball
-Golf does not lend itself to many shortcuts, often demanding honest, hard work - physical demands and regulations differ tremendously from any other sport.
II. We approach sports with an animalistic attitude, “eat or be eaten”
-In football and basketball man is forced to physically turn against his fellow man, and often times encouraged to capitalize on another individual’s weakness.
-Golf cannot supplement man’s appetite to prey on the weak; instead there is a strict etiquette code that is enforced in golf.
III. We are a stimulus-seeking culture that requires a constant flood of sensory input
-Society’s obsession with technology and constant need for entertainment has transformed many professional sporting events into thematic productions: pyrotechnics, half time shows, concession stands, scantily-clad dance teams.
-Golf does not lend itself to theatrics. Instead, it immerses man in nature and demands an appreciation of simplicity.

I will use a powerpoint to display pictures (perhaps a video clip), and I will also integrate a costume for visual significance!
