Grade yourself, baby - Due Dec 3
Ideally, you will complete this assignment before your persuasive speech.
Here's what you'll do. You will watch your speech on DVD in the Annenberg Resource Center. This is in the West Lobby (not the lobby with TVs). You will sign in on the sheet in the center. There are two disks - if you see Kim in the dark, that's day one (my filming quickly got better). You can go at any time during regular office hours. This assignment is worth 10 points.
Please hand this in to me as an attachment in my inbox by Dec 3, last day of class
What will you do:
Complete the following checklist and include comments - including references to improve and things that you were not pleased with:
CONTENT & ORGANIZATION:
Introduction;
___ Attention catcher
___ Listener relevance
___ Speaker credibility
___ Thesis (clear and concise)
___ Preview (organizational pattern evident)
Body:
___ Main points organized in clear pattern
___ Transitional words and phrases
___ Logical flow and order of information
___ Sources (credible and cited correctly)
___ Strength and relevance of evidence
Conclusion:
___ Thesis re-stated
___ Summary of main points
___ Clincher
DELIVERY:
Language:
___ Clarity and strong word choice
___ Extemporaneous style
Physical:
___ Eye contact
___ handing of VA

So you either saw Obama or your saw someone else. About 300 words on the content, delivery, etc. See previous assignment on the speech observation you did earlier for cues on what you should talk about.
At the end, though, I'd like you to boil all of your analysis into 3 take home points for us.

CRAZY date updates...
Visual Aid Speech dates are now 11/4 & 11/9. You will NOT, however, be allowed to use note cards. You don't get note cards in a corporate board room. So learn your speech well. It's 6 minutes TOPS. But I am not going to turn you into another legion of people who are going to kill the world by powerpoint, so let's take an extra day to really learn our speeches & work on their presentation using the lessons from Katya. I will join in as time permits and give you a preview of my top points from my dissertation & you can critique my slides too. Please be VERY careful with your time and remember people will be asking you 1 question about your presentation (not part of your time).
Next, some dates and rescheduling and assignment changes.
1. We are NOT doing speeches for the second speech observation assignment. Your writing will just have to carry you through. Thus, since people who didn't go to Obama were going to have to give a speech, you are now responsible for writing an extra 200 words instead of giving a 1-2 minute speech. Students may at random, however, be asked to tell us about their speech observation. This is still due on 11/9 on the blog.
2. We are not having class on 11/11. We ARE having class on 11/16.
I am canceling the class before Thankgsiving on 11/23.
We will have a make-up class, TBA, but shock shock it may be on a Friday. Sorry.
3. Persuasive speech dates: 11/30 & 12/2 - you will have to stay 10 min over or come 10 min early to fill out evaluations. 12/2 is the last day of class. More info on this assignment Thurs.
This was the only way I could think to make all of this fit in & I hate the last day as a speech day but there you have it.

Speech Observation evaluations
Post your evaluations here)
• write a 500-750 word blog post critically evaluating (not merely describing) a live speech you attend, and
• on Oct 14, present a 1 minute oral presentation in which you share some of your observations. (CHANGED FROM THE 2 minutes on assignment sheet)
Your analysis is to focus on the content and delivery aspects of the speech. Make sure we know enough about what went on in the speech (context, audience analysis) to be able to understand your comments. See the assignment sheet on blackboard for more detail.

Martin Luther King, Jr. - I have a dream speech
Please provide some feedback on your thoughts about MLK's speech, which we saw in class but did not have time to discuss.
Please consider
a) why this speech has become so famous
b) what you noticed about this delivery that was expected or unexpected?
c) what you noticed about the content of his speech (expected or unexpected)?
Context:
King delivered this speech in the middle of the Civil Rights movement on August 28, 1963. This speech was delivered as part of the famous March on Washington, in front of more than 200,000 people who had come to DC from all over the country in the hopes of using non-violent protest as a way to secure civil rights.
Check out how they have outlined the speech here

Bill Gates at TED
Here is Bill Gates talking at TED, an annual conference that brings together really smart people to talk about big ideas. It's what I would call an informative speech. Look at it for delivery and content and see what you can tell me about
a) delivery
b) structure
c) audience engagement
d) information hunger
e) were his examples engaging?
f) did they make you care about what he was talking about? If not, how could he have done a better job.

Topics for Informative Speech- Due Sept. 20
Please post below your topics for your informative speech. Ideally, your topic proposal should contain:
• Specific topic area
• Thesis statement
• Possible main points
Here's what you can't give a speech on, unless you can provide me with a clear reason why your speech is going to be the most original take on the subject I've ever heard.
• Vegetarianism; high fat diets, low carb diets, special food combination diets, etc.
• Importance of exercise, getting enough sleep, healthy diet, etc.
• Sex and/or violence on television (media effects); media & body image/eating disorders (Talk to me, though, because this is broad)
• Legalizing marijuana (or any other drug); lowering the drinking age (again, flexible, particularly for persuasive speech).
• Benefits of the Greek system
• “How to” information that your audience already knows (or could easily discover if they wanted to):
• Prepare a meal, bake cookies, clean their room, etc.
• Brush their teeth thoroughly
• Wash their hands properly
• Play an instrument, dance, etc. (or anything we can’t learn in one speech)

Second Blog Assignment
I'd like to have you guys give a speech on Thursday AND practice outlining. Here's your cue. Pick a song that describes you (or your favorite song) and give it a quick outline that illustrates the principles of subdivision.
Place your outline in the comments section down below
Suggested intro: if you want, sing a few verses. If you'd like to play us the song, send me a youtube clip with the song in it so I can get it ready.
your speech shouldn't be longer than 2:30 secs, DONT WORRY about rehearsing, just have a few notes and PRACTICE. it is PRACTICE.
For example: - Here's a sample, but true outline.
Thesis: The song that describes me best is somewhere over the rainbow, because it has a long emotional history in my life and it is also about my outlook on life.
I. Somewhere over the rainbow has somehow always been around for me.
A. My dad and I used to watch Wizard of Oz together, over and over again, when I was a kid.
B. I played the wicked witch in 5th grade.
C. We danced to the song at my wedding for our father daughter dance.
II. Somewhere over the rainbow has a lot to do with how I think about the world.
A. The lyrics are a little sad, reminding you that the present isn't always perfect.
B. The lyrics also make you think about dreaming big dreams.
C. I am reminded just by the way so many marginalized groups have used the song about making the world a more inclusive place.

First blog assignment
You have two choices about what to reflect on.
1) What did you learn from Rev. Burklo that can be applied to your speaking?
2) Your classmates gave introduction speeches. Did you find any stories that will help you with your audience analysis? What was it like for you to decide on a topic? Was this hard for you?
