Topics for Informative Speech- Due Sept. 20

Please post below your topics for your informative speech. Ideally, your topic proposal should contain:

• Specific topic area
• Thesis statement
• Possible main points

Here's what you can't give a speech on, unless you can provide me with a clear reason why your speech is going to be the most original take on the subject I've ever heard.

• Vegetarianism; high fat diets, low carb diets, special food combination diets, etc.

• Importance of exercise, getting enough sleep, healthy diet, etc.

• Sex and/or violence on television (media effects); media & body image/eating disorders (Talk to me, though, because this is broad)

• Legalizing marijuana (or any other drug); lowering the drinking age (again, flexible, particularly for persuasive speech).

• Benefits of the Greek system

• “How to” information that your audience already knows (or could easily discover if they wanted to):
• Prepare a meal, bake cookies, clean their room, etc.
• Brush their teeth thoroughly
• Wash their hands properly
• Play an instrument, dance, etc. (or anything we can’t learn in one speech)

  1. I'd like to give a speech on the effects of piracy on the entertainment industry.

My thesis will roughly argue that piracy will destroy the industry if we let it, and that a solution needs to be implemented soon in order to save it.

There will be a lot of stats necessary to prove the financial effects of piracy on entertainment. I'll also discuss the lack of legislation to punish piracy in America and talk about suggested strategies to change things. I may talk about technologies like 3D movies and Hulu and such that are designed to implement new media to pump revenue back into the struggling industry and whether they are enough to out-weigh the bad.

Let me know what you think!

  2. I'd like to give a speech on the prevalence of nuclear weapons, their use over history, and how many countries in the world currently have nuclear weapons.

My thesis would propose that the continued existence of such weapons is highly unwise.

I will present a list of a few of the major nuclear accidents in the past and "close-calls" and suggest that it's really only a matter of time before the world runs out of good luck and one of these "close-calls" turns out to be catastrophic.

I will have facts and figures to back up these arguments.

  5. Topic: Crisis Management of BP oil spill.

Since the explosion, BP has put considerable effort in tandem with outrageous fiscal resources into maintaining face throughout the crisis. But have their efforts been successful? Throughout the remainder of my speech, I will discuss the different methods and techniques that were used (or not used) by BP’s publicists and top execs to quell the threat of negative public perception on their company.

    Monroe’s Motivated Sequence Outline:

Attention: been in the news (yesterday(?)) they announced that the leak if officially capped.
Biggest oil leak in American history.

Need: Needed to save reputation of company and only way to do that was through publicity and public opinion.

we are in a public speaking class and their mistakes reflect what we are learning.

    Danish rep:
Talk about their downfalls- i.e. slips in speaking

    Satisfaction: Importance of speech.
How much money went into their campaign to improve public relations.
They needed to rehearse speeches/scripted speeches
Downfall was that they ‘blurted’ things out in interviews that came back to haunt them

  10. I'd like to give a speech on the importance of a comprehensive sex education program in schools.

Thesis: A comprehensive sexual education program that informs students of all their options and proper information, not just abstinence in a one week course, should be mandatory.

    * Abstinence-only education programs are morally problematic by withholding information and promoting biased and inaccurate opinions

*Abstinence-only programs threaten fundamental human rights to health, information, and life.

    * The more information about sex available, the later youth will be in starting to have sex. Delaying the age youth starts having sex has a substantial amount of positive consequences, as it can reduce the amount of sexual partners , STDs, unwanted pregnancies, and all of the emotional distress that comes with the territory of being sexually active.

let me know what you think! thanks :)
